Pediatric Ear, Nose & Throat Specialists

I recently brought my 3-year-old daughter in for an appointment to have her ears checked, as she has had multiple ear infections since her tubes were placed nearly two years ago. During the visit, we were informed that only one tube was visible, prompting a more detailed examination.
Given my daughter’s history of trauma and PTSD from a previous surgery, I made sure to inform the doctor ahead of time. Despite this, the examination became highly distressing for her. We were moved to a different room where additional help was called, and soon there were four of us in the room trying to hold her down to complete the procedure. This level of force and resistance is traumatic for any human, let alone a young child, and I was deeply concerned by how the situation was handled.
After the examination, my daughter, understandably shaken, asked if she was done. I responded, “Yes, baby, you did great,” only to have the doctor reply with, “Did she? What is your standard of good? That took four people.” I was taken aback by this response, especially from a doctor with such extensive medical knowledge, who seemed to lack the understanding of how to comfort a frightened child.
The doctor’s demeanor was cold and dismissive throughout the appointment, which was not surprising but nonetheless disappointing. She then made a remark as we were leaving: “We’ll see you in six months, I hope it only takes one person then.” This comment, coupled with her tone, felt derogatory and insensitive, especially considering that no toddler will calmly lay down and follow instructions in an exam room without some level of distress.
I have had concerns about the doctor’s cold approach in the past, but this experience was the final straw. While I recognize that medical exams can be challenging, it’s essential for healthcare professionals to approach young patients with compassion, understanding, and sensitivity to their emotional needs. Unfortunately, after this visit, I will be seeking care elsewhere for my daughter.
